Can You Paint Aluminium Windows?
If you’re renovating your home, you’ve probably found yourself looking at your old aluminium windows and wondering: “Can I paint these, or do I have to replace them?”
It’s a really common question—and one we get all the time.
The short answer?
Yes, you absolutely can paint aluminium windows.
And in many cases, it’s not only possible but actually the smarter option.
We’ve been re-spraying aluminium window frames for years. It’s always really satisfying seeing someone smile when they step back and see how much better their home looks afterwards. We leave feeling good. They leave feeling good. Everyone’s happy.
But let’s dive into the real questions homeowners ask—and give you the info you need to decide what’s right for your place.
Why Paint Instead of Replace?
One of the biggest benefits of painting aluminium windows instead of replacing them is simple:
The price difference.
Full window replacements can be eye-wateringly expensive. But if your frames are still in decent condition and you’re just not loving the colour or finish, repainting gives you the same result for a fraction of the cost.
You can completely change the look of your home—from outdated silver frames to sleek black, white, or any colour you like. It’s a huge visual upgrade without the huge price tag.
In fact, a lot of people who’ve renovated say it was the best money they spent during the whole process.
Our Process
People are often surprised when they see how thorough the painting process actually is. This isn’t a slap-on job or a quick spray and go.
Here’s what we do on every single project:
- We start by removing the moving part of the window or door—like the sliding panel or awning sash.
- Then we take out all the hardware: rollers, handles, locks, weather felts, the lot. That gives us full access to the surface, and it means we can clean and prep everything properly.
- We protect all the glass and rubber seals using tape and plastic sheeting. Nothing gets painted that shouldn’t be painted.
- Next, we sand back any imperfections on the aluminium surface. This is really important—it helps the paint stick and ensures a smooth, even finish.
- Once the frames are clean and dust-free, we give them a final wipe with wax and grease remover to get rid of anything that might interfere with the paint.
- Then we get spraying. First, we apply a coat of etch primer to help the paint bond with the aluminium.
- After that, we apply three to four top coats of a high-quality, industrial-grade acrylic lacquer. It’s the same sort of finish you’d see on a car—smooth, tough, and built to last.
- Once everything is dry, we remove all the masking, touch up any small details, and reassemble the moving parts with new rollers, handles, and weather felts.
We double-check that everything works smoothly and that there’s no overspray, no dust, and no mess left behind.
We treat every job like we’re working on our own home—and we take a lot of pride in leaving the place looking better than when we arrived.
How Long Will It Last?
We offer a 7-year warranty on all our window and door painting work. But in reality? It often lasts much longer.
We’ve had people get in touch 10 or even 12 years later to say the paint still looks great. In one case, a client called us after moving house—her last place had windows painted by my dad over a decade ago, and they still looked fantastic. She said, “The windows still look great. Can you come and do the new place?”
So I did.
It was a really nice full-circle moment—Dad painted the old house, and I got to paint the new one. A good reminder that what we do actually sticks around and adds value for a long time.
Is Painting Aluminium Windows Worth It?
Absolutely.
If your frames are structurally fine and you’re just not happy with the colour or finish, painting them can completely transform the look of your home. You’ll get a modern finish, a colour you actually like, and hardware that looks and feels brand new.
It’s faster, neater, and way more affordable than a full replacement—and the results speak for themselves.
